Revelation 2:2-4 (KJV)
I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
I read an article this week written by a man noted for his “ministry of warning” reporting about the compromised fruit of another man’s ministry. The suggested lesson of the article is that, because this later man’s ministry focuses on what he is for instead of what he is against, some of his followers have drifted into compromise, never being warned of its error.
- One man is known for his negativity
- The other for his positivity
Mind you, both men hold very similar doctrinal values yet neither man has great balance.
I think that fairly describes the church in Ephesus. They were right doctrinally, even right in their stands. They were just not right in their balance. Their stand had left them with a testimony of no love.
I have heard the first love preached as being many things:
- The joy of salvation
- The faithfulness to church services
- The passion for soulwinning
I cannot day for sure what it is because the passage doesn’t tell me what it is.
It sure wouldn’t be wrong to suggest that it is a testimony of kindness even while defending our faith.
