2 Samuel 3:27-29 Killing

2 Samuel 3:27-29 (KJV)
And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.
And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:
Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.

Not all killing is murder.

This chapter and the next illustrate the difference between those who take life in an act of war and those who commit a murder.

Abner killed Asahel in combat
Abner was not held accountable for it because it was in combat (Asahel would surely have slain Abner in the combat had he been able.) On the other hand, Joab killed Abner as an act of revenge and in a time of peace. Joan was to be blamed. Abner was not.

Next chapter two men killed Ishbosheth on his own bed
They were to be blamed. Abner, had he lived, would have delivered the kingdom of Ishbosheth to David. We do not know what would have become of Ishbosheth had Abner been successful. Abner, so far as David was concerned, acted honorably. The two men who killed Ishbosheth in his bed did not. They were summarily judged because of it.
