2 Kings 25:8-10 Almost Every Judgment Boils Down To This

2 Kings 25:8-10 (KJV)
And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem:
And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man’s house burnt he with fire.
And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about.

It is sobering to think that Jeremiah was in the city all this time leading up to this and had preached to them that, if they would surrender, God would be merciful.

We read this and blame Babylon. We blame Nebuchadnezzar. We blame the armies, the soldiers who wouldn’t just defeat the city but had to destroy it too. But none of this was really their fault. This was Judah’s fault. This was the king’s fault. This was the result of:

  • National pride
  • Spiritual unbelief and a
  • Rebellious heart

We too face our own circumstances of destruction:

  • Emotional destruction
  • Marital destruction
  • Familial destruction

Destruction of:

  • Character
  • Reputation and
  • Health

It’s difficult to pinpoint sometimes exactly why things happen but we almost always blame them on the ones who seem to execute to pain and not on what gave them a way into our lives.

In the deepest sense almost every period of judgment boils down to:

  • Not believing the Word of God
  • Not following the counsel of godly men and
  • Not obeying the lessons of the Bible
