Mark 6:2-5 (KJV)
And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.
The people who heard Jesus were astonished and ask among themselves, “What wisdom is this…?”
The wisdom was a teaching one.
He was in the synagogue teaching. It wasn’t a business wisdom or a economic wisdom. This was the sort of wisdom that could be passed down.
They called this wisdom a mighty work
Though He heals a few at the end of this passage that does not seem to be the work He was most motivated to do. His mighty work was a teaching work.
They were offended at it
Christians, who have received the wisdom from above, may expect that those who are worldly will:
- Not understand our wisdom
- Not agree with our wisdom and will
- Become offended at it. It is foolishness to them.
It is still the wisdom this world most desperately needs.
