John 10:40-42 (KJV)
And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.
And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.
And many believed on him there.
John the Baptist did no miracles. What he did was a greater work than any miracle would be; he spoke the truth about Jesus.
We have a befuddled mixture of false ideas about ministry these days:
Some groups believe powerful ministry is the working of miracles
These groups create these weird scenarios where trumped up reports of healings and visions and “words of knowledge” are manifested. What they will do to convince people they have the power of God is limited only by imagination.
Some groups believe powerful ministry is manifested in notoriety
Billy Graham and others like him are lauded as great men of God because of their popularity.
Some groups would define the power of God as having large audiences
Of course the size of those audiences can be different depending on the group. The mega-church bunch might call it several thousand. Another might reduce it to several hundred but the mindset is still the same; numbers equal authority and power with God
Another group might say that such power that is in the number of professions in Christ they record
It might be they are not able to keep them in their church, or even get them there one time, but they can still say they led them in a prayer. Enough of these professions becomes, for them, a mark of the power of God.
I prefer the one John the Baptist was known for, he spoke the truth about Jesus
Everything else can be faked, trumped up or man made. But the truth about Jesus as found in the Word of God, only this uplifted in the Bible, accountable to everyone who possesses a Bible and happens only through honest study of the Word of God.
