1 Kings 17:1 (KJV)
And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
There are challenges to viewing Elijah as a young prophet here, but this is the first time we have heard of him in the Word of God. It happens that this chapter covers a period of approximately 3 1/2 years. This seems to be the “standard” length of training for preachers in the Bible.
In this chapter Elijah learned:
The message of God can be a painful one.
He was not personally immune to the effects of his own message.
Though he was impacted he was also protected.
A stay in the wilderness was likely not in his personal plans, but God did take care of him
God has resources the world could never understand.
Who would have ever thought the ravens would bring food to a man?
We May expect that God’s people will provide for us.
They may have little of their own, but God blesses his preachers through their gifts and God blesses them for blessing us
Tragedies happen even while serving the Lord.
A man of prayer can help in the time of tragedy.
Elijah went on from this to accomplish one of the most powerful of all Biblical miracles. He was not a perfect man, and these years of training had not perfected him.
But he was a man used of the Lord.
