2 Chronicles 34:17 Found, In God’s House

2 Chronicles 34:17 (KJV)
And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.

This is one of at least three cleansings and repairs of the temple after a period of neglect:

Joash repaired the Temple in 2 Chronicles 24
It was then that Joash instructed that a chest be set up with a hole bored into the lid for people to give. They gave so much there was plenty and more for the work the priests were to do.

Hezekiah repaired the Temple in 2 Chronicles 29
Hezekiah restored worship in the temple but this once again stopped in the early reign of Manasseh and then under Amon.

Now Josiah, cleaned the Temple and made necessary repairs
It was at this time that the Bible says they found two things in that Temple:

  • They found the Word of God
  • They found money

The Word of God is the basis of all true worship
Without it we would be “flying blind.” With it our path is clearly set forth. It serves like a GPS system to tell us where we are, where we are going, and the direction to get there.

This worship always requires money
It required it in the days of Joash. It requires it in the days of Josiah. It still requires it in our days.

Everything I could read related this to the money that was brought in to the Temple by those Levites who had collected it from all the remnant of Israel. I am in no position to challenge these commentaries but I wonder if what they found was money that had been collected many decades before, under Joash. No matter where they found it I am reminded that God pays His own bills. When we set out to walk the path God sets for us in His Word we can be certain we will find, along that way, the money necessary to be there.
