John 17:1 (KJV)
These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
We tend to think of prayer as making requests. While that is surely a part of what it means to pray, it must not be all that is prayer. In this prayer of Jesus’ only a small portion of it is actually asking:
He prayed to be glorified
vs 1, 5
And that so he might glorify the Father
He prayed God would keep those He had given Christ
He prayed that they would be one
vs 11, 21-22
He prayed God would keep those same from the evil
He prayed that they be sanctified
He prayed that they be with Him
Much of this prayer is not request but His reason for the request. He made these requests based on His own work or their particular circumstances or His personal will.
