Hebrews 1:6 Firstbegotten

Hebrews 1:6 (KJV)
And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

The focus of this chapter is the sonship of Jesus and the contrast between He and the angels. Here there is an emphasis on His being first begotten. Gill says that the Jews would have understood first begotten as a title of the Messiah. He says that this passage seems to be taken from Psalms 89:27 (KJV)
Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

  • He is first in that He is unique from all others who may be said to be sons of God.
  • He is first in that He is above all others who may be called the sins of God
  • He is first in that all other true sons of God are such on account of Him

Gill says he is, “first in causality and dignity: and he may be called the firstborn, with respect to the saints, who are of the same nature with him, and are partakers of the divine nature, and are adopted into the family of God, though they are not in the same class of sonship with him”
