1 Samuel 15:9 The People Insisted

1 Samuel 15:9 (KJV)
But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

The Old Testament serves to provide illustrations both of New Testament truth and of the human experience. In this infamous sin of Saul (as the leader and representative of the people) we see much human nature.

Saul and the people professed a relationship with God
The battle with the Amalekites was an action directly ordered by God.

Saul and the people were only too happy to destroy what was vile and refuse.
Who would want those in their lives?

Saul and the people justified keeping what was, in their eyes, good.
After all, they could at the least be offered in sacrifice to God.

I think I see much of the same thing in modern Christianity. The people are happy to profess faith. They are happy and even expect their faith to help rid them of what is the worst of the flesh and the world. But they hang on to and justify keeping those things of the world they believe to have value. They will even convert it into something Christian. Music is one example.

What might be worse is that their pastors will let them and lead them in doing it. Some of them, I suspect, believe they will be on good ground when they stand before the Lord and say something to the effect of, “I didn’t really approve, Lord, but the people insisted.”
