Psalms 72:1 Pray For Our Leaders

Psalms 72:1 (KJV)
Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son.

I realize that this is a personal prayer. King David was praying himself, that God would give him God’s judgments. He is asking God for judgment:

  • Knowledge
  • Discernment
  • Authority
  • Laws

He was asking God to help him rule well and rule as God would have him to rule.

I realize that this was the king’s personal prayer requests. Still, I can’t imagine a better list of requests to pray for our own leaders, as Paul told Timothy, “for all that are in authority.”[1]

Knowledge
The fear of the Lord,[2] without which no man may have true knowledge.

Discernment
The power or faculty of the mind, by which it distinguishes one thing from another, as truth from falsehood, virtue from vice; acuteness of judgment; the power of perceiving differences of things or ideas, and their relations and tendencies.[3]

Authority
Our President, right now, needs God-given and divine authority. He is our elected official, but he is being derided by enemies.

Laws
It is the world of magistrates to determine laws for the good of the citizenry. May God grant our authorities the mind of God in the making of those laws.

[1] 1 Timothy 2:1-2 (KJV)
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

[2] Proverbs 1:7 (KJV)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
