Psalms 119:112 (KJV)
I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.
It has been a few years now that one of the best men I think I have ever known suddenly and very unexpectedly, past from this life into the next. At his funeral, I focused my message on ending well. I am aware that he was not a perfect man and had, no doubt, made mistakes. Some of them, of which I am aware. Inevitably there were many more of which I am not. I can assume that he was not always in complete agreement with me. He never let that be an issue.
- He was encouraging.
- He was supportive.
- He always smiled.
- He never missed a single church event, and
- He was always an encouragement and help at them
I believe he just wanted to end well.
Within just the last few days I saw where a pastor remarked, “Ending well is much more difficult than beginning well.” I’m finding that to be truer than I would have dreamed. Perhaps that is why so many pastors are retiring right now to finish their lives retired and traveling but calling it ministry. Perhaps they knew they could not finish well as a pastor in today’s church culture.
Here’s what I want to do in my final years. I want to so incline my heart to perform God’s statutes that I perform them unto the end.
