Psalms 119:159 Living Food

Psalms 119:159 (KJV)
Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness.

Psalms 119:154 (KJV)
Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word.

Psalms 119:156 (KJV)
Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to thy judgments.

When a man is born again, his spirit, once dead in trespasses and sin, is quickened or made alive. The word quicken means to be alive or made lively. The Old Testament word here translated quicken three times. Has a strong relationship to the concept of reviving. It’s the idea of an empty stomach. When one is provided food, his body is revived. He is made lively again.

My interest in this is due to my recent understanding that Ezra may have been the penman of this Psalm. Ezra prayed God would give “a little reviving” to the people of God. Here we learn that he believed this reviving to be the result of:

  • God’s Word
  • God’s judgments and
  • God’s lovingkindness

His Word is our bread and sustenance.

His judgments give us guidance and instruction.

His lovingkindness is simply His grace to apply it all to our account.
