Luke 7:28 (KJV)
For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
So much controversy surrounds John the Baptist. Even Baptists dismiss John the Baptist, embracing those teachings of the Protestants such as he should be called “John the baptizer.” That his ministry transcended that of the Old and New Testaments, it is clear.
- There had been no prophet for 400 years
- His ministry, unlike any prophet, coincided with Christ’s
- The gospel of Jesus began with the baptism of John the Baptist
- He was not Elias the prophet but was the fulfillment of the prophecy concerning him
John the Baptist truly was the greatest of the prophets who was much more than a prophet.
Even then, he was so much less than Jesus Christ:
- Who came just after him
- Whose ministry superseded his
- Whose way John merely made plain
Jesus humbled Himself to become the least of men. John the Baptist’s most important duty was to point out the One who was so meek and lowly there was no one who would otherwise desire Him. Jesus was so much greater than John the Baptist and yet it was John the Baptist who baptized Jesus.
As great as John the Baptist was, the One who made Himself least was greater.

 Isaiah 53:2 (KJV)
For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
