Genesis 7:2 (KJV)
Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.
We have the introduction of a concept not previously seen in the Word of God, clean and unclean animals. I think we read into the passage what we have read elsewhere. Noah would not have had such an advantage.
And here we discover something of that early world of humankind. God’s relationship with Adam and Eve must have been such that they knew God’s character and if not instinctively, at least intuitively, have known what was acceptable as a sacrifice; what was clean and what was not. They knew, as it were, the Word of God because they had known the Word of God.
Then they must have passed, from generation to generation, what they recalled of that Word of God. Noah recalled enough to know the clean and unclean animals. Job, who lived some time after the flood knew something of the sacrifices and right worship.
Slowly, as time progressed and as more people chose to reject what was known of God, this innate knowledge became blurred and nearly dark. God refreshed it through the writing works of Moses, recording under inspiration of God what was recalled of human history: man’s relationship with God, fall, and God’s work of calling out a people to Himself. God, through the Pentateuch, gave clarity concerning the clean and unclean animals. God did not invent this for Moses’ generation but made a written and official record of it so it would not be lost again.
The mind of man tends to decline away from God. It is His Word that brings us back to those truths concerning His character, His worship and what is a right relationship with Him.
