Numbers 25:12 Ministers of Peace

Numbers 25:12 (KJV)
Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

Albert Barnes says, “Phinehas became highpriest after the death of his father Eleazar, and the office, …, was perpetuated in his line; nor indeed is it known to have departed from that line again until the typical priesthood of the sons of Aaron was merged in the actual priesthood of the Saviour”

Gill adds, “the priests had a peculiar nearness to God, and enjoyed his friendship, favour, and peace with him, and because the right administration of their office was the means of peace between God and his people,”
(I note from the context that the very ministry which is able to bring peace between God and man sometimes does not appear peaceful between man and the man of God.)

In like manner we, who are saved by the blood of Christ, serve in the ministry of reconciliation as the means of peace between God and others.

Though the priesthood remained in his family until it was encompassed in the priesthood of Christ, we know that His family struggled being faithful to their promises. We too struggle with faithfulness.

May our Lord enable us to serve Him more faithfully as ministers of the covenant of peace.
