Revelation 4:4 (KJV)
And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.
I have been taught that the twenty-four elders represent the churches of the Lord. I am not at all opposed to that teaching but, since the Bible doesn’t actually say, and since the number twenty-four seems significant, I think of them as the completed work of God.
- Twelve representing the twelve tribes of Israel
- Twelve representing the twelve apostles
I understand the objections to the representation of the twelve tribes as, at this moment, God’s work with them was not finished. Still God is not bound by time as we are.
John specifically saw twenty-four seats and twenty-four elders. The seats indicate, I think, preparation. I am reminded of John 14, “I go to prepare a place for you” and Ephesians seated together. God has prepared for all who will come to Him, whether it is Jew or Gentile, whether it is Old Testament or New, whether it is male or female, young or old, God is prepared to receive us.
The seats are around God’s throne. They are not around some venerated saint or admired preacher. Our focus in heaven won’t be a hero of the faith. Our focus will be the Object of our faith.
Seats are a place of rest. Our work will one day be finished. We will enjoy the presence of the Lord where we will spend eternity enjoying Him and worshiping Him.
 John 14:2 (KJV)
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
 Ephesians 2:6 (KJV)
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
