Judges 20:30 If A Thing Is Right

Judges 20:30 (KJV)
And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

By all standards this is a difficult passage.

  • What had happened to the concubine
  • The husband’s response to what happened
  • The choices that the tribes made against Benjamin
  • That GOD had on two occasions told them to go against Benjamin and allowed them to be beaten
  • That women were “taken” to be wives of the remaining Benjamites

The only way to explain the entire ordeal, in my opinion, is Judges 21:25 (KJV)
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

I do not condone any action in this account, and I do not believe we are supposed to.

That said, there are lessons. One of them is that apparent failure and even repeated apparent failure, is no indication that a person is out of the will of God or that they should stop their effort. Israel tried and failed twice. They seemed to being failing the third time. But things were not as they seemed.

If a thing is right, it is right to do even if we fail in our doing of it.
