1 Samuel 2:6-8 (KJV)
The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.
As a portion of Hannah’s prayer of praise, she provides a beautiful piece of deep theological truth. It is the Lord who
- Kills and makes alive
- Buries or heals
- Makes poor or makes rich
- Brings low or lifts up
Hannah saw it as of the Lord that she, a poor childless woman, gave birth and that the son born to her would become the great prophet in Israel, Samuel. God took her from the “dung hill,” as it were, and set her son among the princes; he, being the one who would anoint both Saul and David.
The text is not fatalistic. Do not read it that, since God kills or makes alive, there is nothing we can do. It is instead hopeful. Since it is God who does these, we can pray and expect great things of Him.
