1 Samuel 12:25 It’s On Us

1 Samuel 12:25 (KJV)
But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.

This passage, taken together with,
1 Samuel 12:13-15 (KJV)
Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.
If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God:
But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.
indicates that the fall of King Saul was as much the responsibility of the people as a whole as it was of Saul himself. Of course, Saul was personally responsible for his decisions, but the congregation of Israel had rejected the Lord by asking for a king. God’s promise was that, if they would pursue the Lord, He would preserve both them and their king. If they continued in wickedness, both they and their king would be consumed.

This seems especially relevant in a country such as the United States, where our government is “by the people, for the people.” I’m not giving our officials a pass. They are responsible for their own actions. But neither do I want to forget how they got where they are. Every man and woman holding high office in the United States of America is there because the American people put them there. Every one of them is a public servant. That means they can only take the nation in the direction that the people of our land allow.

If we are to be consumed, the fault lies squarely upon us.

May God help us!
