Psalms 83:18 Not For Vengeance

Psalms 83:18 (KJV)
That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

This Psalm is imprecatory in nature. The Psalmist is pleading for judgment upon the enemies of himself and his nation.

He has declared to the Lord the dangers he perceives these enemies are to the cause of the Lord.

He has called upon God

  • to make them perish,
  • to make them as stubble in the wind,
  • to consume them as wood in the fire,
  • to drive them to fear in the storm,
  • to fill their faces with shame.

But the key to the entire Psalm is verse 18.

The Psalmist’s heart is not for vengeance upon his enemies but for God to be glorified.

  • Vengeance is personal. It loses the big picture.
  • Vengeance is as evil as those without God because it forgets God.
  • Vengeance has no regard for the heart of God, but only for the hurt we have felt.

Our world needs the Lord.

Oh Father, so work in this world that men may know you only are the Lord.
