Matthew 7:17-20 A Reason to Fear

Matthew 7:17-20 (KJV)
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

This, along with the warnings of James about:[1]

  • The mouth
  • The fountain and
  • The fig tree

ought to strike profound fear into the heart of any professing Christian who is as known for their corrupt communication, mean spirit, and bitter, unforgiving attitude as they are of Christian graces.

Jesus said that they cannot be a good tree and will be hewn down.

I understand, and I am thankful for the grace and mercy of God, which is new every morning and quick to forgive. I am grateful for the truth that we, as undeserving as we are, are hidden in the righteousness of Christ. This gives no license for continuing, year after year, to produce such evil fruit. At some point, the grace of God reaches its full measure, and the hand of God brings judgment.

Fear professing Christian. If your fruit is not sweet, fear.

And be converted.

[1] James 3:10-12 (KJV)
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
