Matthew 8:3-4 (KJV)
And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
“I will; Be thou clean.”
Could there be any words more wonderful to hear from our Saviour than, “I will?”
This man had, in desperation and absolute need, cried out to Jesus, “Lord if thou wilt.” To receive the response that he did would be good news. Maybe some would say the best news. This is the kind of news you publish in the papers. This is the kind of news journalist would wish to take national. This is the kind of news one would want to tell everybody.
But Jesus told him not to tell. He was instructed by Jesus instead to:
Go to the priest
That is, to the house of God as it existed in that day.
Do as Moses had commanded in the Word of God
This is the great news in our day right now. We do, of course, need to be witnesses. We need to go around the world with the message of salvation. But we need, in our time, something greater. What we need today are for Christians to engage themselves in the house of God, learn the Word of God, and to do it.
Any other sort of witness creates a doctrinally weakened believer who will eventually create an anemic and, ultimately, ineffective church.
We, of course, need more salt and light. But what we need most is savory salt and a light set on a hill.
