Jeremiah 9:4 (KJV)
Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.
I can just hear the accusations thrown at Jeremiah.
“Don’t be so cynical!”
“Nobody likes a cynic!”
But that fact was, Jeremiah was right. He wasn’t looking at the glass half empty. He was looking at it for what it was.
I do not imagine that every soul in Jerusalem would utterly supplant and slander. But I do expect that it was a common trait in his time.
Here’s the thing, a positive message will often ignore the problem until the problem reaches deadly or irreversible proportions. To ignore the so-called cynic is to do so at terrible peril. I think our country may be in the shape it is because too many Christians focused on the positives or on select negatives to produce what was, in their minds, a positive outcome.
We are too busy trying to pick fruit and not nearly busy enough seeking and then speaking the truth of the Bible.
