Luke 2:1 Arrogant and Egocentric

Luke 2:1 (KJV)
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

Mankind is so arrogant and egocentric. Caesar Augustus decreed that “all the world” should be taxed. True, Rome was a large empire. They did rule a large part of the Middle East as well as some portion of Europe. They had fingers that reached into what became the British Isles and had some influence as far south as Egypt. But. in its greatest day, Rome controlled just a fraction, a tiny piece of all the world.

In many respects they didn’t even control those places they believed to be under their thumb. They never converted the Jews, for instance, into their paganism. They had a presence in Israel. The children of God were in no position to run them out. But Rome was in no position to push them either.

What we see in the account is that there was one in control of all the world. God superintended through the dominion of Rome and the rebellion of Israel to deliver to all the world, in a manner no man could duplicate, a Saviour – Jesus Christ.
