John 11:19 The Presence of Christ Divides

John 11:19 (KJV)
And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

Jesus’s disciples were confused why Jesus did not rush to the side of Mary and Martha after he had heard of Lazarus. The thing is, others would be coming too. Mary and Martha, being from Bethany, near Jerusalem, were Jews by heritage. Their family and all of their associates were Jews. But they happened to be followers of Christ. Jesus would offer Mary and Martha more comfort, hope, and help than all the Jews combined. When He came, both Martha and Mary left the company of the Jews to see Him. The Jews wept with the ladies. Jesus spoke preached to them. The Jews who had come to comfort Mary and Martha at the death of Lazarus would soon seek to see Lazarus dead.

Christ said of Himself that He came not to bring peace but a sword. The presence of Christ divides between people who either believe or do not.

Some these days think then that Christ is the problem. But those who think this are always those who do not believe He is who He said He is, and therefore do not acknowledge that the stakes are as great as He said they are.

Eternal life – We would long that all should possess it. But we must not overlook it just because some deny it.
