Exodus 4:1 What If They Don’t Believe Me?

Exodus 4:1 (KJV)
And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee.

The first nine verses of this chapter are surrounded by Moses’ question whether anyone would believe him.

Exodus 4:8-9 (KJV)
And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.
And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.

He had a legitimate concern as, forty years earlier, they had not believed him. It almost cost his life.

The fact was, neither Pharaoh nor the Jews did believe him when he first returned. It took a serious length of time and a set of plagues before either one believed. Even then, there were still some doubts and doubters.

Whether our message is believed is a lesser concern for you and me. God has ways of working through our weaknesses. He may not work in the ways we expect or in the timing we expect, but He is at work through our weaknesses and their doubts. We just need to obey Him and preach the message.
