Numbers 16:3 Has He Lifted Himself Too Much?

Numbers 16:3 (KJV)
And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?

The argument of Korah and his followers seemed sound.

  • Moses and Aaron had taken too much upon them[1]
  • All the congregation was holy
  • The LORD was among them all

These observations made Korah feel like Moses and Aaron had “lifted up” themselves. Nothing could have been further from the truth.

Similar characters frequently make similar accusations against those in the ministry. The fact of the matter is,

  • No preacher is any better than the people of his congregation
  • Some of the people of his congregation might seem better suited to have the preacher’s position
  • The preacher does have a position of both prominence and power in the church

It can look like a lot for one man. Has he lifted himself too much?

When Korah accused Moses and Aaron, the LORD himself solved the matter. I’ve wondered why God doesn’t do the same for other preachers.

But then, He shouldn’t need to. The Bible gives instructions for a life of faith. It has never been God’s intention to slay every evil act of men. It is His intention to

  • Point out what is evil,
  • Offer men a better choice and
  • Provide for man a way of salvation

We shouldn’t have to have every evil abruptly and harshly handled.

What we should do is learn from the Bible and follow it.
