Matthew 3:12 (KJV)
Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
I thought that chaff was a polite term for the unsaved.
Strong’s defines it as “cast forth.”
But Websters gave me cause to reconsider.
Webster’s Dictionary says, “Chaff – Refuse; worthless matter; especially that which is light, and apt to be driven by the wind. In scripture, false doctrines, fruitless designs, hypocrites, and ungodly men are compared to chaff.”
Who would ever want to be considered that?
“Light and apt to be driven with the wind”
This is descriptive of so many. It is the very mantra of liberalism. Unstable. Shifting with every current of time and gust of culture.
Sometimes the winds blow softly, and liberalism seems to move barely. It might even rest alongside that which is planted, secure, and safe.
Other times, such as in our day, storms drive the chaff in swirling furry farther and farther from the well-grounded. The chaff beats upon the plant, causing disturbance and potential damage.
God, in His time, will burn up this chaff in unquenchable fire.
A graphic picture of hell.
