Psalms 119:71 Faith in the Face of Affliction

afflictions, directed by and placed into the hands of God, are good for us

Psalms 119:71 (KJV)
It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.

Here is a hard pill.

Most believers, I think, would agree with the sentiment, or at least say they agree. But affliction is just no fun. It would be impossible to enjoy it. Most of us would call it insane to enjoy afflictions.

(Isn’t that what we think of tattooing, piercing, and cutting? People who engage in these things proudly display pleasure in afflicting their bodies. It’s nuts. It is grievous to God as the defacing of His creation. But in the corrupted nature of the flesh, it is an attempt to reconcile with this truth. A man, at odds with God, unnaturally uses affliction to punish themselves and seek reconciliation.)

  • By nature, we do not like to be afflicted.
  • By nature, the normal, healthy individual avoids afflictions.

But afflictions, directed by and placed into the hands of God, are good for us.

  • It is through them we learn to rest in the Lord.
  • It is through them we are driven to learn His statutes.
