Psalms 119:111 (KJV)
Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.
The 119th Psalm is all about the Word of God. It is referenced in every verse of the Psalm except, I think, one.
Here, the Word of God uses the word “testimonies.”
It just means witness or someone who stands up for us. The Word of God supports us, speaks on our behalf.
I am reminded of 1 John 2:1 (KJV):
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
To have one advocating on our side is indeed a reason for a heart filled with rejoicing. The Bible stands for us, not against us.
The word “heritage” means an inheritance.
It is a possession passed from one generation to the next.
- I am grateful for those who possessed it before me.
- I am grateful they never squandered the inheritance.
I am especially grateful for those who served to preserve and protect the inheritance so that I might have it in its full, infallible, and inerrant form.
And I am prayerful that I might serve to see those generations after me inherit the Word of God in the same inerrant fullness I received it.
