Psalms 119:116 Shameless Faith: Holding Firm in God’s Promises

Could a Christian ever be ashamed of his hope in the Lord

Psalms 119:116 (KJV)
Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.

Could a Christian ever be ashamed of his hope in the Lord, of his trust in the Word of God?

• That God’s Word is true, there is no doubt.

• That God upholds His people is without question.

We might be ashamed of our hope:

If and when we walk away from it
There are those who, though professing Christians, lose heart and return to a life of the world. To insist they are not saved is impossible.[1] Like the seed planted in thorny or stony ground, they have no root. What a shame that is.

If and when we fail to exercise it
As did Peter when he denied the Lord. The circumstances overwhelmed him for a time. Though he was restored, he serves as an eternal illustration of the believer who, if but for a moment, forgets his faith and succumbs to fear.

God’s answer to the prayer of this passage is the Word of God. When we delight in and meditate upon the Word of God, as God teaches us to do, we will be upheld and supported through the trials of life.

[1] Though I believe biblically it is possible that is the case.
