Revelation 21:25 (KJV)
And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

A few days ago I found myself in a position where I needed to get up early. I was a bit on edge when I went to bed because I wanted to make sure I really would wake up. About 2:00 in the morning I awoke with a start. I thought someone had opened our bedroom door. No one was there and I was a bit perturbed because I only had a little bit left until the alarm rang. I had almost gotten back to sleep when I thought I heard it again.

As I lay there, now nearly wide awake, the thought occurred to me that perhaps God had awakened me early to get to work. I got up and went happily to work.

The reason cities closed their gates at night was to protect the citizens from danger. Dangers come very often at night, in the darkness and while we are sleeping. The gates of the heavenly city need never close because there is no night and no danger. According to the book of Hebrews there is rest in heaven, but there is no need of fear in heaven.

What promises await us when we finally reach that heavenly time when all that God has planned is done.

Revelation 1:7 KJV Coming With Clouds

Revelation 1:7 (KJV)
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

 

Concerning the opening words of this verse, John Gill writes,
“The manner of his coming will be “with clouds”; either figuratively, with angels, who will attend him both for grandeur and service, or literally, in the clouds of heaven…”

 

Albert Barnes says,
“The design of introducing this representation of the Saviour, and of the manner in which he would appear, seems to be to impress the mind with a sense of the majesty and glory…”

 

Jamieson, Faucett and Brown adds to this that clouds often represent “wrath to the sinner.”

 

Clouds can mean:
Something of grandeur to us
Those billowy shining white clouds are a magnificent sight to behold.

 

Something of peace to us
I am reminded of my brother and me in our youth, laying in the grassy yard, looking at the clouds as they peacefully floated by.

 

Something ominous to us
This became the most real to me when, for a brief time, I lived in Oklahoma. Dark clouds there often indicated hailstorms and possible tornadoes.

 

 

So when Christ comes:

  • It is magnificent and glorious to the believer
  • It signals a time of great peace to those who are his but
  • It ushers in a great storm of tribulation for those who have refused him

2 Thessalonians 2:3 Popular Deceptions Concerning the Tribulation and Rapture

2 Thessalonians 2:3 KJV

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

 

It seems to me that Paul wrote 1 and 2 Thessalonians for such a time as this. The discerning Christian senses the evil of the hour and cannot help but believe that the coming of the Lord must be near. But we are also aware that there have been times of terrible tribulation in the past. We feel a need to strengthen the saints for hardness should Christ not return soon.

 

Signs of the times seem to be advancing rapidly. One of them that is growing in popularity is the deception that Christians will have to go through the Tribulation of the last day. More and more young, zealous preachers are rejecting the hope of the coming of Christ to rapture us away from that Tribulation and embracing the doctrine that Christians will endure those days and that Christ will not rapture us until the end of the Tribulation Period. Paul urged the believer not to let any man deceive them into believing it. That means the doctrine of Christians going through the Tribulation is a lie. The doctrines of:

  • pre-wrath
  • mid-Tribulation, or
  • post-Tribulation

are not different slants on the same truth. It is a deception. It is a lie. It most be warned against.
