Luke 3:7 (KJV) Have You Warned Someone?

Luke 3:7 (KJV)
Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

John the Baptist’s words were accusatory. These multitudes came not for truth the truth. But there is a question here every Christian ought to ask himself concerning those multitudes; “Who hath warned you…?

I see this as similar to “Am I my brothers keeper?” Yes, I should be. I ought to take responsibility to see that:

  • Those multitudes of people have been warned
  • The warning is a true and biblical one and
  • The warning is impressed upon them with proper and sufficient urgency

Matthew 21:33 (KJV) Tell Them Again

Matthew 21:33 (KJV)
Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:

I had a pleasant conversation with a man today. He said his dad was a very strong Southern Baptist who was always digging into his Bible and looked for chances to talk to people about his faith. The trouble is, it apparently did nothing for his son. This man I spoke with is a very kind man, but not a believer and is almost clueless about spiritual things. As we spoke the conversation went from one spiritual topic to the next. There was almost no end to error in his thinking. Although he was pleasant, he was completely unaware of these spiritual things.

Jesus was already teaching in the temple when the chief priests and elders of the people approached and began asking Him questions. The conversation continued on until, in verse thirty-three, Jesus said, “Hear another parable…” There was still more they needed to hear, still new things they should learn, still incorrect conclusions that needed to be corrected.

While I am certain we can “dump” too much on people at one time, I am also certain we should never give up on them. We ought to always be looking for another way to express the truth of the Bible and another opportunity to express it to them until we are finally able to bring them to the truth.

Don’t give up.

Tell them another parable….

Can you name the last person you spoke to about the Lord? I would love to hear from you. Leave comments below. (Of course, I am not asking for names. LOL)

Matthew 13:2-3 (KJV) Qualities of the Harvest

Matthew 13:2-3 (KJV)
And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;

I love the contrast in this scene. Jesus is in a boat talking about sowing seed. It is a foreshadowing of what is to come because later in the chapter He will be on land talking about fishing.

Jesus uses these two well-known earthly occupations as parables to illustrate what is both the heart of God and the work of the Christian. We are to gather in produce.

The wheat of the field and the fish of the sea represent the souls of men and women for which the Lord is interested.

  • Both have life but harvesting brings to death
  • Both are harvested only with great effort
  • Both have harvests that include something profitable and something unprofitable
  • Both are really out of human hands.

We use the tools we have and experience we gain to improve our yield but can never guarantee our yield.

Matthew 11:4 (KJV) Go, Show Again

Matthew 11:4 (KJV)
Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

This passage is rich with benefit for the believer. The character of Christ, the nature of man, and the importance of John the Baptist are all here. There is also a hint at the sort of ministry the Christian has toward those around them.

When John had doubts Jesus’ response was “Go and shew John again…” Go, show and again.

Go
The Christian is to be active. Evangelism, discipleship, encouragement and edification ought not be passive events in the Christian life. We should be busy about this business.

Shew
Jesus told them to show John again the things which ye do hear and see. You don’t have to make up something you don’t know; just show them what you have heard and seen in your faith.

Again
This may be the hardest part for us. We feel like everyone has already heard and we don’t have anything new and earthshaking to tell them. Perhaps we have already told them personally all that we know.

Jesus said “Go, show him again.”

To my reader:
Every Christian can witness to the unsaved, encourage the doubters and minister to growing believers. Just go and show them again what you have been hearing and seeing, as you walk with the Lord. I would love to hear from you. Leave comments below.

The Biblical Use of Emotional Appeals

Ephesians 4:1 KJV

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

Paul had said in Ephesians 3:1 that he was a prisoner of the Lord Jesus Christ “for you Gentiles”. Here he uses that as a motivation for both his plea and their doing of it.[1]

Appeals based on emotional and heart rending circumstances are often criticized in modern Christianity. It is, however, undeniable that:

  • They can be effective
  • They were used effectively by Christ and Apostle Paul
  • Therefore they may be used in a Scriptural, effective and ethical manner

[1] The argument can be made that the “therefore” of this refers the reader to the great doctrinal truths of Ephesians chapter three. I do not deny this to be the case but only add to it that Paul’s mention of being a prisoner at the beginning of chapters three and four must have “hit home” in the hearts of these first century believers to whom Paul originally addressed this letter. Therefore his being a prisoner must have relevance in his “therefore”.
