2 Peter 3:9 The Lord Is Not Slack

2 Peter 3:9 (KJV)
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

The Lord is not slack … The primary interpretation and application have to do with the return of the Lord, the consummation of all things. Specifically, the passage addresses the mockers who question the promise. When they scoff and challenge our faith, the Word of God answers them, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise”.

I want to recommend to you that we can direct this promise our way. When things get very hard, when we have a difficult time understanding why we suffer so. When you look to God for help, but it seems like none comes, remember that the Lord is not slack concerning His promise. He will come. He will come on time and in time.

What a day that will be! All of the suffering, heartache, and pain will be ended. We who are Christ’s will live eternally and in eternity with Him.

2 Peter 2:2 A Reviving of Truth

2 Peter 2:2 (KJV)
And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

The way of truth is evil spoken of whenever a large number of professing believers follow the pernicious ways of false teachers. This is certainly the case today. We have a multitude of false teachers, a growing number of them. They fill their buildings with people who, desiring to be close to God, choose a teacher who tells them what they wish to hear.

Pernicious means destructive.
This way is not healthy, not holy, not heavenly and will destroy the testimony of any who believe it is.

We need a reviving of truth.
We need a return to simple, honest preaching and teaching of the Word of God.

Only this will result in the building up of God’s people and the testimony of honor among their peers.

2 Peter 1:9 Don’t Forget

2 Peter 1:9 (KJV)
But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

This passage happens just after the seven things to add to our faith. The Word of God urges us to be diligent in adding them and assures us, if we do so, we will have an abundant entrance into heaven. But then the passage warns us that if we lack them:

  • We are blind
  • We are near sighted and
  • We are forgetful

I think I know a lot of people who have forgotten that their sins are forgiven. Having not grown in their faith, they begin to slip in their faith and, finally, they fall away from their faith.

It is not that they have lost what Jesus gave them, they have just forgotten. Being forgotten they fall from the blessings, the grace, the joys of their faith. They lose sight of the long game, the end of all things. They will still be admitted into the everlasting kingdom. They will just not have the abundant entrance they might have had.

2 Peter 3:14 Be Diligent About These

2 Peter 3:14 (KJV)
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

It is enlightening to consider those things the Bible teaches us to be diligent about. Much false teaching demands believers to be diligent in things that are almost trivial in the Bible.

2 Peter chapter three is consumed with teachings concerning the day of the Lord. It finalizes the whole thing by telling us that the material and earthly things that surround us will all be dissolved and replaced with new heavens and a new earth. Because we know these things to be so, we ought to be diligent to be found at His coming:

  • In peace
  • Without spot and
  • Blameless

2 Peter 3:5-6 Ignorance

2 Peter 3:5-6 (KJV) For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: This sounds like it was hand written for our day. This world is not ignorant but willingly ignorant of those things that are key to life and godliness:
  • Creation
  • The Flood
  • Judgment of God
These simple but foundational principles have been passed down almost inherently in our genes. We know them to be true because:
  • We have the Word of God
  • We have the witness of the Holy Spirit
  • We have placed within us the consciousness of this truth
Those who reject the Lord do so willingly, consciously. They design schemes to replace what they inherently know to be true. They build walls to remove themselves from those who speak the truth. They set up heroes to trust in rather than the truth. Our modern educational system leads the way in this willing ignorance. It is advanced through science. It is lauded in the arts. Those who know the truth choose to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ instead.   To my readers: First of all, thank you! It is a great joy to me to know you read the thoughts and lessons God has given me in His word. Secondly, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave comments. 2 Peter 2:1 Yet Unsaved

2 Peter 2:1 (KJV)
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

There is a piece of doctrinal truth buried in this verse that has to be understood in order to get the rest of the chapter; even those false teachers have been bought by the Lord. His blood was shed for them.

  • His death
  • His burial, yes even
  • His resurrection

was for them. When He was on the cross they were on His mind. He bore their sins in His own body when He suffered on the cross. The full price of all their sins has been paid.

Yet they will still see destruction. They are still condemned. All the torments of eternal hell await them. Why? Because even though they are religious and even though they know the message of Christ; even though every sin they have ever or will ever commit is covered by His blood, they are yet unsaved.

The Bible says they have denied the Lord that bought them. The context of the chapter tells us that their denial is not in word, probably not in works, but in faith. The conclusion of the chapter is that they are like a dog that returns to his vomit or a pig that returns to its wallow. They have never been born again. They have never become a new creature in Christ.

In things eternal, it matters little what we say or what we do. The whole issue is settled in faith.

2 Peter 1:2-3 Fuller Knowledge

2 Peter 1:2-3 (KJV)
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

The concept of knowledge, in one form or the other, is a focal subject of this chapter.

Thayer says that the sort of knowledge addressed in these two verses is that of things ethical and divine.

John Gill writes of this knowledge, “…to be understood, not of a natural, but of a spiritual and evangelical knowledge; of a knowledge of God, not as the God of nature and providence, but as the God of all grace, as in Christ, and a covenant God in him, and of the person, offices, and grace of Christ; and which designs true faith in him.”

Robertson’s Word Pictures defines this as “full knowledge” and places it in contrast with the Gnostics of that day – heretics whose system of belief held that only those with a special knowledge could be saved. Rather than being a mystical knowledge released from within through meditation (think Eastern Mysticism) the knowledge that multiplies grace and peace; the knowledge that provides access to all things that pertain unto life and godliness is found in a relationship with God through Jesus.

We do not find grace and peace, life and godliness through unlocking some spiritual thing within us. We obtain them through a fuller and complete fellowship with God.

2 Peter 2:10 Liberty Under Government

2 Peter 2:10 (KJV)
But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

The term government refers to mastery or rule. It is any sort of organized authority.

  • Parental
  • Corporate (as in work)
  • Spiritual

We tend, I think, to equate the word to purely political. To do so in this instance would destroy the context. This passage is all about despising spiritual authority. It manifests itself in those people who claim to believe in God but not organized religion.

I spoke with a man this week who said I am a false teacher because I insist the Bible commands Christians to unite with a local church. He said that because the church is the people and not the building we can worship anywhere we want. He is exactly the person Peter speaks of. They demand liberty but are servants of corruption.

God organizes everything. He is a God of order. We would do best to find liberty under His government.

2 Peter 3:15-16 Those Who Abuse the Bible

2 Peter 3:15-16 (KJV)
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

There are two sorts of people who abuse those passages of the Bible that are “hard to be understood:”

Those who are unlearned
The clearest case for expecting those who enter the ministry to be “not a novice” lies in the fact that it is so easy to wrest the Scriptures, especially those that are hard to be understood, and teach something far from the truth. The current shift of young, restless and reformed is certainly a case in point. Though it isn’t true of all of them, it is true that many of them have been swept up in that which they do not know.

Those who are unstable
The corrupt nature ensures that there will always be those willing and ready to take advantage of the unlearned and simple. While neither is good, the case of this later is so much more heinous because they know they are wresting the Scriptures. They are fully aware of what the Bible says but choose to present it in the way they please and thereby mislead those who may be misled.

Clear, consistent and patient teaching is the way to counter those who wrest the Scriptures.

  • The unlearned must be taught.
  • The unstable must be exposed.

2 Peter 2:1 Twisting the Bible

2 Peter 2:1 (KJV)
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that those who would twist the Scripture in one thing would twist it in others as well?

The modern false teacher wrests the Word of God in a number of subtle ways. In other ways their error is not so subtle. Only those who refuse to see would not see these false teachings. A simple one is discovered in this very passage; the Apostle Peter makes a distinction between those false prophets (in the Old Testament era) and false teachers (in the current era).

  • Prophets are past, even the false ones
  • Teachers are current, even the false ones

Those who claim to be prophets, and those who follow after them are equally blind and blatantly rebellious against the Word of God. It cannot be that they do not know what the Bible says. It is too plain, and they are not ashamed to promote at least some version of the Bible to their peers.

No, the issue is rebellion. The issue is twisting the Word of God whenever it teaches something they dislike (such as women preaching) or else ignoring the Word of God whenever it denounces something they do (such as claiming the office of prophet).

Any one of us is capable of being blind to the clear teaching of a passage that contradicts our preconceived or cultural ideas concerning the faith.

To reject that teaching once it has been made clear to us is dangerous for our spiritual well being and for the advancement of the Christian faith to future generations.
