Acts 2:1-2 (KJV) How to Be Filled with the Holy Ghost

Acts 2:1-2 (KJV)
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

I am convinced by Acts 1:8 that the power received at Pentecost was not the ability to speak in tongues but to be witnesses unto the uttermost part of the world. I notice that this promised gift was received while they were:

All in one place
Here is the value of faithful church attendance. Christians ought to be at church when there is church.

All with one accord
No bickering envying or bitterness among them.

All sitting
There was order in their services. I can just hear a Pentecostal right now saying that this was before they were all filled. That, the Pentecostal would believe, gives permission for their wild dancing and loud, hyperactive services as they would imply these are evidences of their being filled with the Spirit.

I suggest the opposite is true. I suggest that, in order to have the blessing of filling and witnessing power from the Holy Spirit that there has to be:

  • Quiet
  • Orderly and
  • Purposeful

worship and understanding of the Bible.

Too much preaching today is nothing but a pep talk in the churches and too little preaching is actual understanding of the Word of God. Therefore too much that is called Christianity is filled with the emotionally charged spirit of man and too little is filled with the Spirit of the Holy Ghost.

Revelation 4:5 (KJV) Wherever God Is

Revelation 4:5 (KJV)
And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

The Spirit of God, first seen in this book in Revelation 1:4, and throughout the letters to the seven churches, is seen again in Revelation four (and will be again in chapter five). The working of the Spirit in the churches (hinted at be the mention of the seven lamps of fire) has moved from the earth to heaven where the believers are now represented to be.

  • Wherever God is, believers will be found as the mark of true faith is that they follow the Lord
  • Wherever believers are, a local church will be found as the character of Christians is to assemble into churches.
  • Wherever there is a church the Holy Spirit will be found as the great work of the Holy Spirit is among the churches
  • Wherever the Spirit is there will be Christ as He loved the church and gave Himself for it

Revelation 3:1 (KJV) As Christ Directs

Revelation 3:1 (KJV)
And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

I think John Gill is on track when, of Revelation 1:4 he writes, “…by these seven spirits are intended the Holy Spirit of God, who is one in his person, but his gifts and graces are various; and therefore he is signified by this number, because of the fulness and perfection of them…”

The Lord Jesus claims possession of the stars or angels (pastors) as well as that of the seven Spirits of God. His possession speaks of his authority over. The pastor of each church is subject to Christ. He is not in charge but he is under the direction of the Lord.

The same may be said of the Spirit of God. Though He is co-eternal and equal to Christ in every way He is subjected to Christ in the same manner that Christ is subjected to the Father. The Spirit’s ministry upon churches, each loved of Christ, is directed by Christ. The

  • perfections,
  • completions, and
  • fullnesses

of the Holy Spirit are poured out to Christ’s own churches as Christ directs.

1 Timothy 4:1 The Spirit Speaking

1 Timothy 4:1 KJV

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

Paul wrote these words years previous to the completion of the New Testament. God’s Spirit spoke to those who were the instruments of transmission of the Bible (such as Paul) uniquely. But God hasn’t stopped speaking. Paul said that the Spirit spoke (his word choice tells us he continues to speak) expressly:

  • in plain language
  • in terms not easily misunderstood

The believer may rest assured that God’s same Spirit speaks expressly to us through the Word of God. We have no new revelation as we need none. But we do have illumination; the leading and the witness of the Holy Spirit with our spirit as we study the Word of God. I have no doubt or questions concerning the message of the Bible. It is plain enough. My only failure rests in my own ability to retain what it is God has provided.

Paul said that the Spirit spoke expressly concerning the last days. He did not say when those days should come to an end but he did detail the character of them. This gloomy forecast in no way discouraged Paul and it was not intended to discourage Timothy. It was an honest report on the future that God’s people might be steeled and prepared, but it did not slow their efforts to:

  • win souls
  • reach out for holiness and
  • urge Christians to sanctification

Neither should it ours.
